Animal Farm Orillo Studios, 21st & 22nd February 2015
The Antigone Collective's debut production was an adaptation by Nelson Bond of George Orwell's Animal Farm. We chose Animal Farm because of its universal value. Many believe the story is only an allegory of a specific period in Russian political history, but it is so much more than that, and we wanted to analyse it through theatre in order to go beyond the superficial, allegorical level. Animal Farm is a story that encapsulates just how human rights struggles emerge: the right to freedom that makes everyone equal is corrupted, polluted, modified, until it becomes evident that, indeed, “some are more equal than others”. This is why we chose to tell this story. It is a deeply dramatic fairy tale conceived to make us realise remaining silent when confronted with oppression is a crime. Despite its being a story of failed idealism, it is nonetheless cathartic and can inspire hope.
