The Eternal Future The Basement (Picturehouse City Screen), 15th June 2015
"The Eternal Future" is a brand new student written play by Sam Hickford. Inspired by the life of philosopher Louis Althusser, the play explores the tension between philosophy and practice in the context of Marxist activism. It also tackles mental health, love and murder and the implications of war for an individual, in a uniquely lyrical fashion. As a human rights based company, the Antigone Collective focuses on theatre which tackles issues of both human rights activism and abuse, both of which this play addresses. The violent clash between protagonist Alexander and his wife Barbora embodies the complex relationship between theoretical and practical activism. It is also worth noting that although the play is heavily informed by real-life events, Hickford has transposed Althusser’s biography onto fictional characters, thus creating a sense of universality from this specific struggle. Both of the play’s principle characters (and indeed many of the supporting characters) have suffered gross human rights abuses, namely during the first and second world wars, and the impact this has had on them is made clear by the play’s denouement.
